What can I do to spot the sign of Oral Cancer early on?

You can do monthly self-examinations as checking anything early on will help stop the spread and can increase the chance of successful treatment.
To examine your mouth, throat and neck:
  • Feel your neck and underneath your jaw for any lumps
  • Tilt your head back and look inside the roof of your mouth
  • Move your tongue to the sides, the top and the bottom of your mouth to check all surfaces
  • Pull your cheeks aside to view the lining of your mouth and your back gums
There is not an exact cause of Oral Cancer however it can be linked back to several things such as:
  • Smoking cigarettes, cigars or pipes
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Methods of smokeless tobacco such as chewing
  • History of cancer in the family
  • Spending time in direct UV rays without SPF on their body and lips
  • Drink alcohol in moderation
  • Try cutting down or quitting smoking/chewing tobacco all together – there are many smoking cessation programs and help that can be provided at your local GP’s and even online
  • Always remember to use a UV ray blocking SPF when in the sun
  • Eat a well-balanced diet
  • Always attend regular dental checks as we check for any signs or symptoms as part of your routine examination.

What will the dentist do to check for Oral Cancer?

It is very important to attend the dentist regularly to check for any issues with your oral health, including screenings for oral cancer. The dentist will always do an oral cancer screening alongside your usual checkup, is it painless and only takes a few minutes. The dentist is primarily looking for any physical abnormalities such as discoloration, lumps and difficulty moving your tongue. The dentist will then check for any lumps/sores that aren't visible, alongside asking if the patient is experiencing any tenderness, sore throat and or difficulty swallowing.

With any questions the dentist may ask regarding the screening, you should be completely honest and tell the dentist anything you are experiencing and if anything is out of the ordinary. Should the dentist find anything of concern, he/she will let you know the next steps forward and will keep you informed with any information. Do not hesitate to call us should you have any questions.
