Dental Hygiene

A good oral hygiene routine for at home is very important and is the first and most Important step to preventing/ treating gum disease.

What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is a bacterial infection which causes inflammation of the gums around the margin of the teeth. The inflammation is caused by the build up of plaque and calculus that has been left over time.

Who can suffer from gum disease?

Generally, the cleaner someone’s mouth and teeth are, the less plaque and calculus there is which would lower their risk of suffering from gum disease, however, everyone can get plaque on their teeth which can be brushed off easily when done daily, however if left, it comes into contact with saliva and hardens to form calculus, which cannot be removed with a toothbrush meaning they are at a higher risk of suffering from gum disease. There are also other factors apart from irregular/inadequate toothbrushing that can contribute to gum problems such as smoking, poor diet and prescription drugs.
Symptoms of gum disease include:
  • Gums are red/ purple in colour
  • Gums bleed easily when brushing and flossing
  • Bad breath – bad smell/taste in the mouth even after brushing
  • Receding gums – When the gums move away from the teeth
  • Gums are painful and tender
In severe cases of gum disease, meaning the gum disease has been left for years, teeth can become loose and even fall out due to the receding gums and bone loss.
A good oral hygiene routine for at home is very important and is the first and most Important step to preventing/ treating gum disease. At good oral hygiene routine at home should include, brushing twice everyday with toothpaste for 2 minutes, moving in small circle motions on all surfaces of the upper and lower teeth, including the gums, brushing the tongue is also recommended to remove any bacteria that can cause bad breath.

Flossing/interdental cleaning is recommended once daily to ensure all plaque is removed from in-between the hard-to-reach molars. Other important factors include limiting sodas, alcohol, and coffee, drink more water, avoid tobacco, and visit your dentist and hygienist every 6 months.

Preventing & treating Gum disease

The second most important aspect of preventing/treating gum disease is having regular scale and polish sessions with your dental check-up, along side seeing a dental hygienist. A scale performed by the dentist is helpful to remove any build-up of calculus which will leave your mouth feeling fresher and appear cleaner. However, if the gum disease is active, is it best to visit a dental hygienist as they can perform deep cleans below the gum levels.
A hygienist will treat and prevent gum disease by scaling, polishing and root planing which can remove plaque and calculus, this may be done under Local Anastetic, they will spend around 20-30 minutes treating the gums.

The hygienist will also demonstrate how to clean interdentally and the correct brushing techniques, including the correct way to floss and the correct size tepee brush to suit you. They will also give advice on stopping smoking and how to lead a healthy diet to improve your oral health. It is proven that people who visit a dental hygienist are less likely to suffer from dental issues in the future!
