Inlays & onlays
If a tooth is too badly damaged that it is not able to support a normal filling, an inlay or onlay could be the solution for you!
Inlays and Onlays
What are Inlays & Onlays?
An inlay or onlay can be referred to in dentistry as an “indirect filling”. They are used to restore broken, decayed or damaged teeth. Instead of using chair-side materials such as amalgam or composite, an inlay or onlay is custom made by a dental technician in a dental laboratory– usually out of porcelain, ceramic or gold. They are used on back teeth (pre-molars or molars) for cavities that are too big for a simple filling but not damaged enough to need a crown.
At Antrim House Dental Practice, our team work hard to provide you with a perfect fitting inlay or onlay with an exact colour match meaning your tooth is restored to how it once looked.
Inlays and Onlays
Benfits of Inlays & Onlays
- An inlay is used to restore the central/inner part of the tooth.
- An onlay is used to restore a larger area of damage which involves the tooth’s outer cusps or structure. Long lasting protection – not only are they able to restore the damaged portion of tooth, they also help to protect the remaining healthy tooth structure.
- An onlay is used to restore a larger area of damage which involves the tooth’s outer cusps or structure.
Inlays & onlays are made of durable materials and perfectly fitting, they are perfect in strengthening a damaged tooth.
Not only can we match the ceramic or porcelain exactly to your natural shade, these materials do not discolour or stain in the same way as composite fillings.
Normal fillings such as amalgam or composite may shrink over time, inlays and onlays do not. They are custom made ensuring a perfect fit. They are a great way of filling a cavity between teeth, our dental technicians ensure that they fit flush with your natural tooth structure meaning easy and effective interdental cleaning.
How it Works
Our process makes achieving your beautiful smile simple.
01
Inital Consultation
Firstly, a consultation and examination will be required to ensure the rest of your mouth is fit and healthy. On this appointment your dentist will be able to advise you on the best option to restore your tooth. You can discuss options regarding the material this restoration is made from, each has its own set of pros and cons.
02
Tooth Preperation
Once your treatment plan has been agreed, we will arrange an appointment to prepare the tooth for its inlay or onlay. If there is decay present, this will be thoroughly cleaned out and the cavity shaped accordingly. Your dentist will then record an impression of your teeth to be sent to the dental technician, this will show them how your teeth look and how your teeth bite together. A temporary filling is placed at the end of this appointment to protect the cavity and keep it free of any food debris.
03
Fitting Procedure
The dental technicians take roughly 1 week to manufacture your inlay/onlay. On your final appointment, your temporary filling will be removed and the new inlay or onlay fitted. We use specialist cementing agents to ensure the strongest and secure hold. Your dentist will ensure your bite has not been affected by the new restoration and polish to finish to create a natural, pristine look.
