How Do Bridges Work?
Having missing teeth can have a negative physical and emotional impact to you. A dental bridge is a great option of replacing missing teeth. It essentially bridges the gap created between missing teeth. Typically made from porcelain and metal, we are able to place a natural-looking artificial tooth to replace the gap, this is supported by cementing onto your adjacent healthy natural teeth.
Types of Dental Bridges
There are four different types of bridge we can offer to suit every patient’s needs.
Traditional Dental Bridge
This bridge is the most common. It has two or more crowns and a filler tooth or teeth that are all connected.
Cantilever Bridge
This style of bridge is anchored only on one side by a dental implant which can lead to the bridge loosening over time.
Maryland Bridge
Instead of fully covering the teeth next to the missing space with crowns, this device bonds to the existing teeth using a metal framework.
Implant Supported Bridge
An implant-supported bridge is similar to a regular dental bridge, but it is supported by implants and not by natural teeth.
Dental Bridges
Bridging the gap between missing teeth
Once cemented in by your dentist a bridge is somewhat permanent, they can last anywhere between 5-15 years. Many patients prefer the option of replacing missing teeth with a bridge as opposed to a denture as it fixed in the mouth and can not be taken out, this avoids the potential embarrassment of being without your false tooth. It also feels and acts more like a natural tooth than a removable denture.
If you are missing teeth, it’s a good idea to replace these as soon as possible. Over time teeth can drift if you have gaps in the mouth altering the apperance of your smile and eventually we may not have enough space to fit a replacement tooth in the gap.
