What Causes Halitosis?

Bad breath is a common problem and has many causes for it, some of which are:
  • Smoking / Gum Disease / Diet
  • Bacteria that coat the teeth gum and tongue that release smelly gases
  • Bits of food stuck between your teeth or on your tongue that rot and can cause a bad smell
  • Foods or drinks that have strong tastes or smells such as garlic, onions, coffee
  • Medical condition called xerostomia which is also known as dry mouth
  • Medical conditions such as infections in the throat, lungs or nose, sinusitis, bronchitis, diabetes, liver or kidney problems

How can I prevent Halitosis?

There are many different ways to help prevent halitosis including:
  • Brush your teeth and gums properly twice a day – your dentist can show the best way to do that
  • Remember to brush your tongue along with your teeth using a tongue scraper or brush
  • Visit your dentist regularly – this will allow your dentist to keep an eye on areas where plaque might be caught between your teeth and also allow them to clean those areas
  • Keeping a routine to keep your mouth clean and fresh
  • Clean between your teeth using interdental brushes or floss
  • Using mouthwash
  • Chewing sugar-free gum

How to tell someone if they have bad breath

Some people might have bad breath and not realize it and it can often be difficult telling someone they got bad breath, however telling them can help and might them help realize if there are any underlying conditions causing it.
  • Talk to their partner or a loved one close to them
  • Speak to a close family member
  • Be considerate and understanding
